Olga Sinclair

Norwich Writers’ Circle is sad to announce the death of one of its longest serving members and President: Olga Ellen Sinclair, JP.

Olga passed away peacefully, aged 91 on 28th April 2014, at Acle Old Rectory Care Home. The funeral is to be held at St Faith’s Crematorium on Monday 19th May at 2.00 pm.

No flowers by request but donations if desired made payable to the NSPCC, and sent to: Gordon Barber Funeral Home, 2 St William’s Way, Thorpe St Andrew. Norwich NR7 0AW.

Olga joined the Norwich Writers’ Circle in 1960. She published 25 books under the names of Ellen Clare and Olga Daniels, on historical romance and contemporary fiction, books for children and on local history. She was a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association, and encouraged me to attend the meetings in London and the annual conferences which took place in University buildings during the summer vacations.

In 1969 she became a committee member, and in 1970/71 she was the Honorary Treasurer. She became a Vice-President in 1980, and after Mary Ingate died in 1991, she was elected our President in 1992, and remained a loyal member and prize-giver to the cup-winners until the AGM July 2012, when she felt unable to continue.

We had more than one garden party at their Dove Cottage in Potter Heigham. Her husband Stanley, who sadly pre-deceased her, had a quirky sense of humour. He ran one quiz where we had to identify monstrous or down-right odd ‘ornaments’ he had placed in the garden. One I remember was a yellow ‘marigold’ which was an inflated rubber washing-up glove rising up out of the pond.

Olga embodied in her warmth and humour the aim of the founding members of the Circle : “To encourage the art and craft of writing and promote good fellowship amongst Norfolk and Norwich writers generally.”

From Anne Funnell: a friend since 1992.

Olga can be seen in the picture above, presenting Lyn Fountain with a prize-winners’ cup at our 2012 AGM.
