On 3rd December Norwich Writers’ Circle welcomed back crime writer Alison Bruce to another one of our well-attended meetings at The Assembly House.
Alison returned to adjudicate our Crime Short Story Competition, which she set earlier in the year. The competition, for The Cooper Prize, was to write a short story, of between 1,500 and 2,000 words, using the title ‘It’s Over’ and featuring a male protagonist.
Our guest speaker commented how much she very much enjoyed adjudicating the competition. Alison also went on to say how she was impressed by the diversity that the short stories offered, in type, pacing and atmosphere. In addition to this the crime writer said all the tales had both good and bad bits, and that she had made suggestions to how they all could be enhanced, and possibly expanded, further.
The competition winners were then announced as:
1st – The Cooper Prize – It’s Over – by Sean Hindle
2nd – It’s Over – by Neil Walker
Joint 3rd – It’s Over – by Sally Newton
Joint 3rd – It’s Over – by Jean Dorricott
The evening continued with readings of all the winning competition entries. These readings then lead to further feedback and discussion within our writing group.
A selection of photos from this evening can be seen on our Facebook page.
Norwich Writers’ Circle next meet on 14th December when we will be holding our annual Christmas Celeberation. We hope to see you there.
